I remember that while my childhood friends used their money to buy candy or ice cream, I used my money to buy Betta. I have always dreamed of a pond with my own breed red, blue, and green Betta swimming in between and resting on bushes of water plants. I bought one Betta after another and tried to breed them. Although there were numerous unsuccessful attempts due to inexperience, I never gave up trying.

When I became a teenager, I started learning how to breed and raise Betta from many famous Betta breeders (whom I called masters) in Saigon. These master breeders specialized in champion fighting blood-line fish. It appeared to these masters that I was a smart, obedient, and studios young man who shared with them a common special interest in Betta; therefore, some of them adopted and treated me like their own son. I helped them in breeding, raising, feeding, changing pond water, and many other breeder's chores. I also helped in selecting and training the fish for staging fight and championship tournaments that are popular sports in Vietnam. Through the years, I have learned many valuable lessons from them. Each of the masters has his own unique ways and tricks to produce champion fighting Betta. Until today, though being a betta expert, I am still learning along with them.

One good example for this is the invention of the double tail, crown tail, orange, silver-white, and black Betta. There are so many things you can do with Betta. As a matter of fact, keeping the Betta in the US or somewhere else is different than in its native environment such as Vietnam, Thailand, or Malaysia. With this in mind, I have developed my own methods to provide the Betta its own native environment so that it can reach its full potential capability. I also realize that there are many factors or variables that affect a whole process of creating a successful stock of Betta. These factors and variables include water conditions, water properties, characteristics of fish, appropriate pairing of spawns, type of food, and so on. A small change of one factor or variable may significantly change the outcome of the whole process. Therefore, I never stop learning and experimenting to improve the quality of my Betta.
